Do you plan on transitioning or already in the process? Are you already natural but feel you have not quite found “it”?Did you do a big chop recently or perhaps you plan to soon but don’t know how to maintain natural hair? Not to worry, you’re definitely not alone on this…. Finding the right products for our hair or knowing the proper hair care comes over time. What we should bear in mind is although Hair product reviews are a good guide to choosing products that work, products do not have the same effect/result on different people, for the obvious reason that our hair, head and skin are different.
It is first, important that we know our hair type because it brings us steps closer to choosing the products suitable for our hair. by this we refer to the Porosity, density and texture of your hair. Lemme explain a little….
Hair Porosity: This simply refers to how your hair retains moisture. How easily moisture gets into your hair and how easy it gets out.
Low Porosity: It’s difficult for moisture to get into the hair and prone to build up. Choose protein free deep conditioners, lighter liquid based moisturizers and products rich in coconut oil, shea butter and jojoba oil.
High Porosity: This looses moisture very easily and prone to frizz; this level of porosity may be caused by environment or chemical damage. People with this hair type are advised to choose Leave ins, moisturizers, hair butters and sealers.
Medium Porosity: This hold the right amount of moisture for the hair-not too much in not too much going out and easy to maintain. Deep conditioning should do the trick.
Hair Density: refers to the number of strands on your hair…when people refer to full hair or scanty hair this is what they mean and this can be divided into three:- High: Choose heavier products, hair butters, gels and creams. Medium: choose heavier products, hair butters and creams. Low: Choose light products, volumizing shampoos and conditioners, also mousse to give a fuller look.
Hair Texture: refers to the thickness of the hair strand..This can be characterized into three:- Fine (which has less a less protein structure, prone to breakage and doesn’t hold curls well. Heavy products have the capability of weighing fine hair down. Coarse: has thicker hair strand and holds curls well. Normal:which is more pliable than coarse hair.
It has been noted that the first 3-5 ingredients on a product container is basically the main ingredients of the product. So after noting what your hair type is, it is important that you note ingredients of the products you want to purchase. For example if you have low hair porosity you should ensure that your deep conditioning treatments do not contain protein and any product you purchase contains either shea butter, coconut oil or any other one good for your hair.
What does your hair love?
Over time, we would have noted some products which work well on our hair…like my hair love Eden Body works Jojoba deep conditioner and Pantene All Natural Co-wash…. and also from experience we would have known why our hair loves it, perhaps its because of the ingredients. I would advise that you keep a journal of products you try and how your hair reacted to them, that way you’ll be able to know what works best for your hair.
No need to buy very expensive products when there are cheaper products with the same content and might even produce a better result. Check your pocket before setting out to buy products. Make sure they are useful at the moment, well except there are special offers like BOGO free or something of that nature, then you could buy and store them.
